Virus Prevention, Detection, and Remediation

Look at the box to the right, updated daily by Symantec Corporation, and you'll see that viruses and worms are an immediate, constant threat.

Next, click on the virus map below and take a look at infection levels around the world. Move the mouse over the map and examine the controls once the large window appears; there's a lot of information in this popup!

Now, down to business. If you don't have current virus protection and you think you have a virus, click here to run an excellent free online virus scanner from Panda Software. It catches problems that other antivirus programs miss, and it's saved our clients' computers more than once. (Select the "Scan your PC" button once the page pops up. Panda will ask you for an email address, and you will need to accept a download. Small price to pay for an instant, accurate virus scan. This is not an ad, but it is an endorsement.)

What's the big deal?

Computer viruses are more insidious and infectious than ever before. You simply cannot access the Internet without having good virus protection! Yet many people don't install protection -- or let their current protection expire without renewing -- or don't realize their virus protection has quit working -- or never run a virus scan.

Virus and worm attacks make the front page, and with good reason. They destroy productivity and waste money. We are keeping quite busy killing viruses for clients and restoring their computers -- and networks -- to good health.

Clean your PC --
or we'll do it for you.

We at Landmark can often fix the damage if we catch it in time.

But so can you. Basic computer skills these days require the following:

  • Have a good virus detection program installed on each of your computers.
Don't want to pay? Then download the excellent and free AVG Antivirus from GRISOFT Inc., headquartered in the Czech Republic.
The free version of AVG Antivirus doesn't run automatic scans, and is for noncommercial use only. Make a note to run a scan every week. There are other free scanners available; here's a list.
  • Make sure your virus definitions are up to date, and don't let your protection expire -- even for a day!
  • Scan all your files for viruses at least once a week. You can schedule an automatic scan with most virus programs using the Windows Scheduler.
  • Don't open email from people you don't know, and particularly don't open email attachments without knowing who they're from and why you received them.
  • Don't open email from people you do know if the subject line is suspicious. Many viruses raid victims' address books and hijack legitimate names and email addresses in an attempt to get you to open the virus-bearing message.

If you do get a virus or worm -- or think you may have one, don't ignore it. Shut the computer down and reboot it only in Safe Mode. Run a full virus scan. If that doesn't work, use System Restore (Windows Me or Windows XP) or the Emergency Recovery Utility (installed by Landmark on all computers that we've sold) to go back to an earlier configuration.

Ignoring the signs of a virus can be fatal to your data. We have seen clients' computers totally wiped out by viruses . . . which brings us to the last point:

The ultimate protection against a virus attack is a current backup of your entire hard disk.

The peace of mind that comes with having a total backup is well worth whatever time and money it takes to make that backup. Don't believe it? Just ask any of our clients who've been hit by a virus, and simply reloaded from their backup.

What?
You weren't backed up?

We can help you recover files lost because of a virus or worm. Click for information on data recovery.
